Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
